May repair and maintain equipment making emergency adjustments or assisting with major repairs as necessary. *** RFI Response *** Issue 1 -Repair, Maintenance, and Emergency Adjustments The Heavy Equipment Operator performs routine operator-level maintenance and minor field adjustments necessary for the safe operation of assigned equipment. Tasks include checking and adding engine oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid, fuel, and other operating fluids; inspecting tires, tracks, belts, hoses, fittings, guards, attachments, lights, and safety devices; lubricating designated grease points; tightening loose externally accessible bolts, fittings, or connections; replacing minor consumable items such as bulbs, fuses, and wiper blades; cleaning equipment; and making minor adjustments to attachments, tracks, controls, or similar externally accessible components. Tools and materials include basic hand tools, grease guns, tire-pressure gauges, fluid funnels, portable air compressors, manufacturer-supplied adjustment tools, lubricants, oils, coolant, hydraulic fluid, fuses, bulbs, and fasteners. The equipment includes excavators, loaders, backhoes, graders, dozers( rollers, forklifts, dump trucks, and similar construction equipment and vehicles, some of which are diesel-powered. The Operator does not maintain, repair, diagnose, disassemble, or make emergency adjustments to the diesel engines themselves. Diesel-engine diagnosis and repair, including internal repairs and major component replacement, are performed by qualified Heavy Equipment Mechanics. Issue 2-Assisting With Major Repairs When major repairs are required, the Heavy Equipment Operator provides limited assistance to qualified Heavy Equipment Mechanics. Such assistance may include positioning, starting, stopping, or operating the equipment as directed; securing and preparing it for repair; describing observed operating problems; cleaning areas requiring repair; removing or reinstalling access panels, guards, covers, or attachments; passing or holding tools, parts, and materials; and operating the equipment for testing after repairs. The Operator may use basic hand tools such as wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, pliers, and grease guns and may handle lubricants, fluids, hoses, fasteners, and similar materials at the mechanic's direction. The equipment includes diesel-powered excavators, loaders, backhoes, graders, dozers, rollers, forklifts, dump trucks, and similar construction equipment and vehicles. The Heavy Equipment Operator does not independently diagnose, dismantle, rebuild, overhaul, or repair diesel engines. If a major repair involves a diesel engine, the repair is performed by a qualified Heavy Equipment Mechanic; the Operator's role is limited to the supporting activities described above.
