- Offer description:
A Winter Concrete Laborer supports the construction crew by preparing worksites, setting up and dismantling forms, placing reinforcement materials such as rebar or wire mesh, assisting with the pouring process, and performing winter duties such as snow and ice removal, site sanding/salting, cold-weather concrete protection, and maintaining safe working conditions during winter operations. If weather conditions are too cold for concrete pouring operations, Concrete Laborers will perform alternative duties including inventorying concrete equipment; cleaning, organizing, and repairing concrete forms, including welding repairs; cleaning and organizing the shop; painting in the shop, office, or housing areas; remodeling office areas; shoveling snow; refurbishing equipment; and performing maintenance on equipment. The employee uses the same skid steer already assigned to the crew for all winter support duties. Fitted with a pusher or bucket attachment, it clears snow and ice from job sites and access routes, which is the primary means of maintaining safe working conditions during winter operations. Fitted with forks, it unloads palletized salt from delivery trailers; the salt is then spread by hand or with a hand-push spreader on walkways and staging areas for sanding/salting. The skid steer also transports insulating blankets to curing concrete, which are placed by hand over slabs, footings, and foundations to protect against freezing. These winter duties occur only when temperatures prevent concrete pouring and are expected to represent approximately 5% of the worker's total hours during the requested period of employment (October through December), with most time spent on the core concrete labor duties described. On an occasional basis the worker will reorganize the racking n the parts room and storage offices, clear the parts off the shelving, and organize and inventory each part. Refurbishing and maintenance duties consist of routine, non-technical housekeeping: organizing and inventorying concrete tools, forms, and materials in the storage area; washing dried concrete residue and dirt from the crew's skid steer, concrete buggy, and trowels and applying touch-up paint to prevent rust; and performing basic visual equipment checks (inspecting for damage, checking fluid levels), with problems reported to the supervisor for repair by a qualified mechanic. This is cleaning and housekeeping work only, not mechanical repair, welding, vehicle refinishing, or skilled trade work. These duties are incidental to the worker’s primary and predominant duty of concrete construction labor and occurs infrequently relative to core concrete duties. The employee works in commercial concrete construction, producing slabs, footings, foundations, sidewalks, and driveways for commercial projects. Core processes: worksite preparation, setting up and dismantling wood and aluminum forms, placing rebar and wire mesh, assisting with pours, and floating, screeding, and troweling concrete. Incidental winter processes: snow/ice clearing, sanding/salting, cold weather curing protection, and routine equipment housekeeping as described above. Equipment: hand tools, lumber, steel stakes, aluminum forms, and occasional incidental use of a skid steer. The employee works under direct supervisor oversight; no formal operational or quality-control systems apply beyond supervisor-directed task assignment. Locations: the employer's indoor workshop/parts room, an outdoor laydown yard, and multiple commercial job sites.
