Roy Jorgensen Associates, Inc. Maintenance Technicians will perform a variety of tasks involving the maintenance, repair, and improvement of highways, roadways, drainage systems, and associated rights-of-way to ensure safe and efficient travel conditions. This is a hands-on role focused on preserving roadway safety, functionality, and visibility across state and county highway assets.Primary responsibilities include performing routine roadway and right-of-way maintenance such as debris removal, litter collection, and clearing obstructions to maintain safe travel conditions. Workers will perform minor road repairs including patching potholes, sealing cracks, hauling and spreading materials such as gravel, clay, and asphalt to repair road shoulders and fill washouts, and performing asphalt patching using pneumatic tampers. Duties also include installing, repairing, and replacing traffic control devices such as signs, reflectors, and delineators; assisting with roadway striping and pavement markings; and setting up traffic control zones using cones, barricades, and signage, including flagging motorists when necessary. Technicians are responsible for maintaining proper roadway drainage by clearing and maintaining ditches, culverts, storm drains, catch basins, and inlets to prevent blockages and ensure proper water flow. Additional duties include performing basic structure maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs as needed. Workers will assist with loading, unloading, transporting, and staging materials, tools, and equipment, as well as inventorying equipment and supplies. As part of maintaining safe roadway visibility and right-of-way conditions, workers will control vegetation and overgrowth adjacent to roadways and public access areas. This includes mowing grass, trimming and edging turf areas, clearing brush, removing invasive vegetation, and trimming trees, shrubs, and other growth that may obstruct visibility or encroach on roadway infrastructure. Duties also include weeding, pruning, mulching, planting, watering, and maintaining landscaped areas as necessary to support right-of-way upkeep. Workers will dig, tamp, and trim overgrown vegetation and may assist with spreading soil, mulch, gravel, or similar materials in support of maintenance activities. Technicians will operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment including shovels, rakes, pruning saws, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, pole saws, sod cutters, string trimmers, commercial mowers, blowers, electric clippers, twin axle vehicles, and tractors used in roadway and right-of-way maintenance. Workers may perform routine preventative maintenance on tools, equipment, and work vehicles, including monitoring, maintaining, and calibrating equipment. Additional responsibilities include removing litter and debris from assigned work zones, including homeless encampment clean-up areas; performing graffiti removal; following all safety procedures and traffic control protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment; and assisting with emergency response activities such as roadway clearance following storms, accidents, or other incidents. Workers are expected to perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment and complete other related highway maintenance duties as assigned.
