  Highway Maintenance Technicians will perform roadway and right-of-way maintenance duties along highways, frontage roads, and public rights-of-way to maintain safe, functional, and well-maintained transportation corridors across municipal and rural areas. This is a hands-on role focused on preserving the safety, accessibility, and functionality of state and county highway infrastructure and roadside assets. Primary responsibilities include mowing grass, trimming and edging vegetation, clearing brush, removing invasive vegetation, and performing vegetation control along roadways and rights-of-way to maintain visibility, safe roadway conditions, and unobstructed access to highway infrastructure such as guardrails, signage, lighting, and drainage structures. Workers may perform wand mowing and brush clearing along highways and frontage roads as part of routine right-of-way maintenance. Workers may also haul and spread materials such as gravel, clay, and asphalt to repair road shoulders and fill washouts, and may perform minor asphalt patching using pneumatic tampers or other hand tools. During the winter season, Highway Maintenance Technicians will perform snow and ice removal activities to maintain safe travel conditions along roadways, shoulders, sidewalks, and other assigned areas. Duties include operating snow blowers, shoveling snow, clearing ice accumulation, and applying salt or sand to improve traction and ensure safe conditions. Workers will stage, monitor, and replenish inventories of de-icing materials and may assist with installing or repairing snow fences. Workers may also load and unload materials and equipment as needed and assist with roadway maintenance operations including brush clearing, debris removal, and right-of-way upkeep along highways and frontage roads. Highway Maintenance Technicians will operate a variety of hand and power tools, including shovels, rakes, pruning saws, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, pole saws, sod cutters, and string trimmers. Workers will also operate powered maintenance equipment such as commercial mowers, blowers, twin-axle vehicles, tractors, and other equipment used for roadside and highway maintenance. Workers may operate equipment used for sweeping paved surfaces and are expected to conduct preventative maintenance on vehicles and heavy equipment, monitor storm drains and culverts, and maintain equipment as required. Duties also include digging, tamping, removing litter and debris from assigned work zones, and maintaining roadside areas in accordance with project specifications, including cleanup of roadside areas when necessary. Workers will perform roadway maintenance duties such as patching eroded pavement and assisting with the installation or repair of roadside infrastructure including guardrails, shoulders, berms, lighting, highway markers, and warning signals by loading and unloading materials and tools, shoveling, digging, staging materials, and cleaning work areas. Regular maintenance of drainage systems is required, including clearing culverts, ditches, catch basins, and inlets to prevent blockages and ensure proper water flow. Additional responsibilities may include placing safety cones or signage around work areas and flagging motorists when necessary to ensure safe working conditions. Workers may perform routine preventative maintenance on maintenance tools, equipment, and work vehicles and may assist with spreading gravel or similar materials used in roadway and roadside maintenance activities.
