Manual itinerant work mechanically planting tree seedlings, pre-commercial thinning, applying herbicides, pruning, and maintaining boundary lines to reforest and maintain timberlands. Use equipment in planting and thinning trees, spreading or spraying chemicals, preparing sites for planting, or performing other forestry services. Operate a rubber-tired or crawler-type tractor. Lubricate equipment, fuel equipment, adjust equipment, and make emergency repairs to equipment. 2022 John Deere 3105E Cab Tractor: 161 inches long & 96 wide, weighing 10,240 lbs, 105 horsepower and a 2024 D3-12L crawler dozer, 129 inches long & 83 wide mid-size, weighs 21,369 lbs, 104 horsepower. Mechanically plant on a prescribed tree spacing of 14ft, 20ft, etc., row width. Rubber-Tire planting is used on open-field areas where no trees, heavy brush, or stumps are present. Establish a starting point of areas needing planting, maintaining straight rows as planting is being performed, and maintaining planting quality. Crawler type planting is used to mechanically plant trees in areas that are not open-field or may not have been site-prepared. The front of the crawler-type tractor has a v-blade that removes dirt, brush, fallen timber, or any other type of debris across the planting areas. Walk-around equipment to make sure the machine is sound and safe to run. Check engine oil, hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid, grease fitting points, and engine coolant by removing cap with hand tools such as a wrench. Undercarriage and tire inspection tasks consist of checking track tension and monitoring wear on rollers, idlers, and sprockets; inspecting tire pressure with tire gauge, checking for deep cuts or embedded debris, and ensuring wheel lug nuts are tight using wrench. Check air and fuel filters. Select and cut trees according to markings or sizes, types, and grades. Identify diseased or undesirable trees, and remove them, using power saws or hand saws. Spray vegetation with herbicides to reduce competing vegetation. Thin and space trees, using power thinning saws. Mark boundary lines. As a minor activity gather pine straw, pull seedlings from nursery beds, perform prescribed burning tasks under the direction of fire suppression officers or forestry technicians and right of way maintenance to gain access to tracts to plant. Workers who hold or obtain a MSPA certificate with driving authorization may transport workers, count and check, and be offered additional work hours. Drug free workplace. Drug testing may be conducted throughout the employment period at employer's expense. These jobs involve propagating, protecting, and managing forest tracts. Workers who possess a Farm Labor Contractor Employee Certificate and operate an inspected company vehicle may transport crew members from their housing location to the initial worksite and between worksites during the workday, as necessary, under manager supervision. Transportation duties are incidental to the primary forestry work being performed. “Count and check” refers to verifying crew attendance by counting workers before departure, upon arrival at the worksite, and as needed throughout the workday. Workers who hold a valid FLCE Certificate may be offered additional hours associated with transporting crew from their housing location to the initial worksite before the start of the workday, under manager supervision. These duties are limited to authorized transportation activities and any related attendance verification necessary to ensure all workers arrive safely and are accounted for prior to commencing forestry operations. May transport workers using a standard motor vehicle using a Class D license.
