- Offer description:
*RFI Response* “Animal housing” refers to small, enclosed, non-commercial educational animal habitats (e.g., chicken coops or similar small enclosures) integrated into the preschool outdoor learning environment, when approved and compliant with school and health regulations. Supporting design and maintenance includes assisting with layout planning, placement, and material selection (e.g., wood structures, fencing, ground coverings); preparing sites and staging materials; and supporting routine maintenance such as cleaning, inspection, and ensuring hygienic conditions in accordance with regulations, including strict exclusion protocols for children under 5. No veterinary, commercial farming, or regulated animal handling duties are performed. The role involves practical, implementation-focused design support within outdoor learning environment projects, not independent or licensed design work. Duties include collaborating with designers, contractors, and teaching staff to implement approved plans; organizing spatial layouts (gardens, pathways, gathering areas); positioning natural materials and learning elements; advising on placement of materials and “provocations” to support inquiry and child engagement; supporting project phases (design–build–commission) through site preparation, installation, and setup; coordinating with teams to maintain design intent; and making minor field adjustments under supervision to improve safety and usability. *Original* To support the transformation of the preschool outdoor area into an intentional outdoor learning environment (design–build–commission). The Specialist will execute landscape, light hardscape, planting and site organization tasks and work cooperatively with designers, contractor(s) and teaching staff to integrate outdoor spaces with the school’s pedagogical program. The role requires demonstrated knowledge and prior practical experience with Reggio Emilia educational concepts so the outdoor design and installations align with child-centered, inquiry-based learning principles. Key Responsibilities (by workstream) 1) Outdoor learning environment development (landscaping & site setup) •Implement zones of exploration, accessible gardens, gathering areas and circulation paths per approved plan. •Prepare and stage natural/sustainable materials (wood, stones, soils, mulch, loose parts) and maintain secure material storage. •Maintain safe, child-protected work zones during construction and daily operations. 2) Light hardscape (dry-laid / non-structural masonry) •Install/assist with paths using stone/flagstone with compacted bases; build dry-laid retaining edges and garden borders. •Prepare bases for seating/meeting areas (leveling, compaction, surface drainage) under GC/design supervision. 3) Basic external irrigation & drainage support (non-licensed tasks) •Assist with installation and maintenance of basic irrigation lines and surface drainage solutions; support testing and adjustments per plan. •Any licensed plumbing or permit-required work will be performed by licensed professionals; the Specialist acts as assistant (prep, materials, testing under supervision). 4) Gardens, edible & sensory plantings •Install and maintain raised beds, herb/vegetable plots and pollinator/sensory gardens; implement soil health and water-wise practices. •Document maintenance needs and provide staff training for continuity after project completion. 5) Animal enclosures (only if approved and compliant) •Support design and maintenance of approved animal housing subject to school/health rules; strict hygiene and exclusion rules apply for children under 5. 6) Collaboration with pedagogical staff (Reggio Emilia alignment) •Work directly with teachers to ensure installations support Reggio Emilia approaches (provocations, natural materials, atelier ideas). •Co-design and advise on placement of materials and provocations to promote inquiry, documentation and child agency.
