- Offer description:
***RFI Response*** At the start of each shift, material handlers must ensure they have all required safety gear and promptly punch in, ready at their workstation to begin piling boards. Before starting, they inspect their work area and equipment—including the circular saw and carts—for any safety or equipment issues, reporting concerns to the inspector. During board piling, handlers maintain instruction sheets and marking crayons, pile boards accurately to ensure correct grading, and make sure the bottom and outside boards are full length, with flush ends and the best, most square sides facing outward. They are expected to pile boards at a rate of eight per minute for a single pile and three per minute for multiple piles. Sawing instructions guide the number of layers per pack, and handlers count and mark layers during downtime to track progress. Lumber is trimmed using the circular saw as directed by the inspector, following safety procedures such as keeping hands away from moving blades, unplugging the saw when changing blades, and never forcing the saw during cutting. Any issues with board thickness are reported to the inspector. Handlers also operate the bander to secure packs of lumber and must remain at their position except during breaks, returning promptly afterward. Front pilers are responsible for cutoffs, ripping lumber, and assisting with re-saw jam-ups. Training coworkers is part of the role, requiring professionalism and sharing best practices with new employees and transfers. Improvement suggestions regarding processes, procedures, or equipment are encouraged, and planning ahead— such as using spare carts—helps avoid surges of lumber. Daily cleanup involves sweeping floors and picking up debris around the Unscrambler and Rotochopper areas during downtime, properly disposing of cardboard, strapping, and scrap, and cleaning the breakroom and restroom on a rotating basis. End-of-shift cleaning includes sweeping and scooping sawdust, inspecting and cleaning equipment for excess debris, and identifying opportunities for improvement, such as fixing leaks or excessive debris, which are reported to the inspector. Each piler is assigned specific areas to clean, and if finished early, they assist others or help clean the green chain area or bathroom/breakroom. At the end of the shift, handlers check the bulletin board, record overtime on a blue slip, and punch out. When the job description states that the Material Handler assists the lumber inspector with the use of handheld saws to trim lumber as required, this means that the lumber inspector determines which boards require trimming and specifies the location and extent of the cut based on grading and production standards. The Material Handler then performs the physical trimming of board ends or defects using handheld or circular saws in accordance with the inspector’s instructions and established safety procedures. The worker does not independently determine grading standards but carries out trimming and handling tasks under the inspector’s direction to ensure boards meet required length and quality specifications.
