Provide assistance to skilled roofers installing and repairing roofs. Set ladders, scaffolds, and hoists in place for taking supplies to roofs. Remove old roofing materials, sweep and clean roofs, and cover roofs with layers of roofing felt or asphalt strips before installing tile, slate, or composition materials. Attach roofing paper and composition shingles, using nails. Attach sheets of metal to roof boards or building frameworks when installing metal roofs. Clean and maintain work areas, tools, and equipment. Load and unload materials, supplies, and tools from work trucks. May chop tar into small pieces, heat tar in kettles, and apply shingles, gravel, or asphalt onto tar. Hoist tar or other roofing materials, supplies, and equipment onto roofs, using ropes and pulleys, or carry materials up ladders. Clear drains and downspouts and clean gutters.
