The prep cook (also known as a food preparation worker) is an individual who assists the chef in preparing the food, maintains the cooking environment to be clean and safe for all staff members, and takes on culinary tasks as they arise. Prepares a variety of foods, such as meats, vegetables, or desserts, according to customers' orders or supervisors' instructions, following approved procedures, cleaning dishes, utensils, and silverware. The prep cook may also order supplies, keep records and accounts, price items on menu, or plan menu. The job requires physical endurance as well as mental determination and involves working in stressful conditions for most of the time. The work schedule can be hectic, requiring working during holidays, nights and early mornings.
