The worker will paint walls, equipment, buildings, bridges and other structural surfaces with brushes, rollers and spray guns. You can remove old paint to prepare the surface before painting. You can mix colors or oils to get the desired color or consistency. • Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel or other finishes to equipment, buildings, bridges or other structures using brushes, spray guns or rollers. • Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as wood or bare metal, for finish coats. • Cover surfaces with drop cloths or tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting. • Mount scaffolding or swing gates, or install ladders, to work above ground level. • Fill cracks, holes or joints with caulk, putty, plaster or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives. • Mix and match paint, stain or varnish colors with oil or thinning and drying additives to obtain desired colors and consistencies. • Polish the final coats until the specified finishes are obtained. • Read work orders or receive instructions from supervisors or owners to determine work requirements. • Remove accessories such as pictures, door knobs, lamps or electrical switch covers before painting. • Remove old finishes by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning, or using water or abrasive blasting. • Smooth surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool or sanders. • Wash and treat surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover or other preparations, and sand rough areas to ensure finishes adhere properly. • Waterproof buildings, using waterproofing or caulking. • Apply decorative or textured finishes or coatings. • Apply material to fill gaps in surfaces. • Apply paint to surfaces. • Apply sealants or other protective coatings. • Review drawings or specifications to determine work requirements. • Select construction equipment. • Smooth surfaces with abrasive materials or tools.
