This is a winter feedlot operations and cold-weather equipment position. Each fall, as pasture goes dormant, the employer weans its calf crop and brings its cattle into the feedlot and winter holding locations, where they are fed a delivered ration until late February. The worker prepares and delivers that winter ration: operating a tub grinder to grind hay; mixing ration ingredients as directed; operating and maintaining the feed truck and the payloader used to load and deliver the ration to the feedlot bunks; and cleaning bunks and bunk aprons of spilled or spoiled feed. The worker keeps the feedlot operable in subfreezing conditions: removing snow and ice from pens, alleys, bunk aprons, and farm roads with a tractor, loader, or blade; thawing, repairing, and replacing frozen automatic waterers, tank heaters, hydrants, and water lines; breaking ice on stock tanks; scraping and hauling manure and bedding from winter pens and holding areas; and repairing pens, gates, bunks, windbreaks, and fence damaged by winter use. The worker performs the cold-season equipment work of the operation: winterizing tractors, loaders, trucks, and implements (fluids, batteries, fuel systems, tires, and hydraulics); engine and hydraulic repairs; welding and fabrication of feed and pen equipment; and servicing the hay grinder, feed truck, and loader so that daily ration delivery is not interrupted. This position does not include calving, sorting pairs, caring for orphan calves, tagging, herding or moving cattle on pasture, weaning, or the care of the cow herd on pasture, and does not include tillage, planting, spraying, cultivating, harvesting, or hauling crops. Tasks change with the weather, and the worker may be required to change duties often.
