Grade, sort, or classify unprocessed food and other agricultural products by size, weight, color, or condition. Workers are required to pack 8 clam shells per minute. Using care not to bruise or damage the produce workers will perform the following duties: • Place products in containers according to grade and mark grades on containers. • Weigh products or estimate their weight, visually or by feel. • Discard inferior or defective products or foreign matter, and place acceptable products in containers for further processing. • Grade and sort products according to factors such as color, species, length, width, appearance, feel, smell, and quality to ensure correct processing and usage. • Record grade or identification numbers on tags or on shipping, receiving, or sales sheets. • Package agricultural products for shipment or further processing. • Mark agricultural or forestry products for identification. • Measure physical characteristics of forestry or agricultural products. • Sort forestry or agricultural materials. • Record agricultural or forestry inventory data. The job requires a minimum of 2 months of verifiable commercial agricultural employment experience, preferably on a vegetable farm, handling both manual and machine tasks associated with commodity production and activities. Workers must be able to perform manual as well as mechanized activities with accuracy and efficiency. This is hard, strenuous labor, under cold, wet conditions in the spring and extreme heat and humidity in the summer. Physical Demands/Work Environment: Workers will work in packing areas used for packing vegetables. Workers are expected to perform duties including boxing, weighing, loading of product. Workers will assist in loading/unloading trucks with products weighing up to and including 50 pounds of lifting to a height of 5 feet or long periods of time. Workers must be able to work on their feet in bent positions and must be able to bend and stoop for long periods of time. Work requires repetitive movements and extensive walking. Workers should be physically able to do the work required with or without reasonable accommodations. To be qualified for this position, a worker must be willing to perform the considerable manual labor required on such a farm. Sanitation Requirements: For food and general personal safety purposes, all workers will be required and expected to follow common sanitary practices at all times. This is particularly critical when hand harvesting crops for human consumption. Employees are required to cleanse their hands by washing them thoroughly with soap and water after using the bathroom, eating or smoking and before entering the fields for harvest activities or the packing facility for packing operations. GENERAL CONDITIONS APPLICABLE TO ALL CROPS: Field work begins at assigned time, which can vary from either before daylight or shortly after daylight, to afternoon start times. Work environment will be dirty, dusty, and damp, with temperature fluctuations according to the season. Work is performed during light rain and in high humidity and in temperatures ranging from 100+ degrees to below 35 degrees F. Workers must have multi-limb coordination ability while standing, walking, and climbing for long periods. Workers will work on their feet in bent position for long periods of time. Workers will supply their own work clothes. Workers must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. consistently throughout the day. Workers will make repetitive movements, extensive pushing, pulling, and walking. This is a very demanding and competitive business in which quality specifications must be rigorously adhered to. Sloppy work cannot and will not be tolerated.
