Perform manual and mechanized tasks related to the open-range herding, sorting, care, and health monitoring of a commercial buffalo herd. Maintain crucial winter ranch infrastructure, above-ground watering systems, and specialized feeding equipment during peak winter operations. Duties and Responsibilities Livestock Handling & Horsemanship • Herd buffalo across rugged terrain from one pasture to the next. • Execute long trail drives with the buffalo herd over extended periods. • Sort buffalo efficiently based on age, sex, and physical condition. • Demonstrate comfort riding horses safely Health, Monitoring, & Veterinary Care • Identify illnesses, injuries, or physical oddities in buffalo for treatment or culling. • Administer veterinary treatments for diagnosed illnesses or physical injuries. • Assist with veterinary tasks including corralling, sorting, pregnancy testing, and vaccinating. Equipment & Vehicle Operation • Operate pickup trucks equipped with hydraulic bale beds to distribute hay feeding. • Operate All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) safely for herding and tracking buffalo. • Operate farm tractors for feeding hay and clearing ranch paths. • Drive manual transmission vehicles safely across varied ranch terrain. • Efficiently and safely operate power tools for repair work. • Perform routine maintenance and servicing on ranch equipment and vehicles. Ranch Infrastructure & Water Systems • Build and repair ranch fencing using high-tensile barbed wire and fiberglass posts. • Maintain and repair homes and outbuildings located on the ranch property. • Set up above-ground water lines and valves to supply portable water tanks. • Move portable water tanks frequently to track and follow the moving buffalo herds. • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair the above-ground water system under freezing conditions. Job Requirements • Experience: 3 months of verifiable experience in livestock handling (preferably bison), fence building, and operating agricultural machinery. • Vehicle Requirements: Must possess a valid driver’s license and be capable of operating manual transmission vehicles. • Physical Demands: Heavy lifting, long periods of riding/driving, and working outdoors in extreme winter weather and freezing temperatures. H-2A Seasonal Itinerary & Season of Need Active Months (Worker Needed) • October: Prep corral facilities for the annual buffalo roundup. Move herds from summer pastures closer to working facilities. Sort buffalo herd bulls away from the females prior to bringing the herd into the main corral. • November: Corral, sort, pregnancy test, vaccinate, and ship buffalo. Initiate daily hay feeding operations for designated winter herds. • December: Continue extended sorting and shipping operations depending on November timelines. Feed all different herds a minimum of 3 times per week. Rigorously monitor water tanks to keep them from freezing. Move herds across pastures as necessary. • January: Feed multiple buffalo herds at least 3 times per week. Manage winter water systems and prevent line freezing. Move herds to alternate pastures as required. • February: Execute regular winter-feeding routines. Maintain non-freezing water tanks and manually clear ice if necessary. Move herds across winter pastures as required. • March: Continue regular February winter feeding and water maintenance duties. Begin moving designated herds closer to designated calving pastures. • April: Closely monitor and supervise herds during the critical calving season. Identify and treat delivery complications or injuries.
