Duties include feeding and watering animals according to established schedules and instructions, rotating them between grazing areas to ensure access to food and water, and exercising animals to promote their physical and mental health. Employees assist with the delivery and storage of feed, mix specified feed materials, and load or unload crops or materials manually or using equipment such as transfer augers or tractors. They patrol grazing lands and feed yards using all-terrain vehicles, pickups, or on foot. Animal grooming tasks include clipping, shearing, trimming coats, cutting tails, cleaning ears, and docking tails. Employees assist with animal births and breeding, transfer animals between enclosures to support these activities, and protect herds from predators, sometimes using trained dogs. Workers examine animals to detect illness, injury, or disease, and monitor characteristics such as weight gain. They operate farm equipment as needed to feed animals and maintain facilities and structures used for their protection and growth. Responsibilities include cleaning animal facilities and equipment, working in extreme weather conditions to ensure animal safety, conducting stock inspections for disease or parasites, administering medications or vaccinations, and reporting medical concerns to supervisors. Animals are marked for identification using tags or paint and may be segregated by weight, age, or condition. Workers drive tractors, trucks, pickups, and other equipment to distribute feed and water, and operate towed machines like manure spreaders to clean lots. Maintenance duties include inspecting, repairing, and maintaining pens, yards, fences, and livestock equipment. Effective communication with supervisors, co-workers, and others is expected, whether by phone, written notes, text, or in person. Employees must also inspect equipment, structures, materials, and feed to ensure proper function and safety.
