Maintain quiet calm demeanor working around cattle in close quarters (cattle pens and facilities). Work duties include feeding, watering, herding, penning, observing cattle for signs of fear or distress, monitoring herd for health issues, give vaccinations, assist with birthing and caring for calves. Be familiar with birthing plan of what to do, when to do it, who to call for help, and to know when help is needed. Inspect calves for overall health and physical condition, weigh and sort into holding pens for processing based on treatment needs, size, and type. Deworm, vaccinate, ear tag, castrate and dehorn. Identify sick high-risk calves, sort and move to separate pen. Feed and water calves. Position feed bunks and water troughs for easy access to calves. Ensure that calves have access to fresh, clean water at all times. Mix feed. Move calves to pasture. Observe cattle closely for signs of distress, illness, or injury. Care for livestock using animal husbandry practices that impact the well-being of cattle and animal health. Load sellable size cattle for transport. Unload and store feed and supplies. Inspect and repair farm buildings (sheds, barns, etc.). Repair fences, keep electric fence areas clean and free from debris. Keep all work areas clean and free of debris. Perform general farm labor jobs: maintenance on farm equipment (clean, oil, repair); mow areas around buildings and keep clean and free from debris; control grass and weeds. Drive tractors and four wheelers.
