- Offer description:
All applicants must be able, willing and qualified to perform the work described in the job order and must be available for the entire period of employment specified in Section A.3 & A.4. This work order is for qualified individuals to perform duties related to harvesting and maintaining produce in an apple and pear orchard. Workers will perform a variety of orchard tasks, including planting, pruning, training, and watering trees, as well as general orchard maintenance, including picking up brush and preparing soil by removing rocks. Workers will hand-pick fruit from trees using ladders up to 20 feet high and carefully place the fruit into shoulder-harnessed picking buckets. When the picking bucket needs to be emptied, the worker will climb down the ladder and gently empty the fruit into designated field containers. Workers will also perform building and equipment maintenance and repair as needed, including repairing bulk bins and pallets using hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears, hand saws, knives, staplers, and other related tools. Workers will perform harvesting and packing tasks, which include sorting fruit according to size, color, and grade; lining boxes, cartons, or crates with treated paper or cardboard; placing fruit in containers for storage or shipment; weighing, stamping, branding, and dating containers; and packing fruit according to the employer’s quality standards and methods. The assigned duties are physically demanding and require prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and climbing ladders. Workers must be able to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Workers are expected to report to work in suitable clothing and be prepared to perform their duties in a variety of conditions from late summer through early fall, ranging from hot, humid days in September to cool, damp mornings and evenings in October. When harvesting apples, productivity must meet the minimum standard of 60 1-1/8-bushel boxes per 7 hours worked with no more than 5% bruising for fresh market fruit. Workers are require to work 8-hour shifts on Monday through Friday within the hours of 7:00am to 7:00pm and 5-hour shifts on Saturday within the hours of 7:00am to 7:00pm. This schedule totals 45 hours per week. The 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. range accounts for varying orchard conditions (e.g., weather or crop readiness) to ensure that workers are able to complete the required weekly hours. Workers will not be scheduled for a full 12-hour shift. Workers may be offered additional hours beyond the standard schedule, subject to the mutual agreement of the workers and management. Workers will be provided with a 60-minute lunch break, staggered between 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., as determined by both the workers and management. Workers may choose where to eat their lunch and must return to work after the 60-minute break. The daily and weekly work schedules may vary depending on orchard conditions, including weather, sunlight, temperature, and crop readiness. The employer will notify workers of any changes to the schedule. The employer will provide one day of training and allow two days of work for workers to demonstrate satisfactory performance of orchard duties, including pruning, thinning, and harvesting apples, pears, and plums. The employer will provide all tools and equipment necessary to perform assigned orchard tasks at no cost to the workers. Workers must be able to understand and follow directions in simple English.
