- Offer description:
All applicants must be able, willing and qualified to perform the work described in the job order and must be available for the entire period of employment specified in Section A.3 & A.4. This work order is for willing, able, and qualified individuals to perform a variety of manual agricultural tasks related to the planting, cultivation, harvesting, and packing of fruits, vegetables, and horticultural specialty crops. Crops may include apples, pears, cherries, plums, asparagus, berries, corn, squash, beans, root crops, pumpkins, tomatoes, and other specialty crops. This is a general farm worker position that combines crop production, harvesting, packing, and basic farm maintenance duties. Workers will spend time in the fields using hand tools and equipment to prepare soil, plant crops, and perform crop care activities. Duties include watering, weeding, pruning, thinning, harvesting, sorting, packing, and other tasks necessary to support crop growth and production. Workers may also assist with general farm upkeep and maintenance as assigned. Workers may also apply fertilizers and pesticides to support healthy production. When crops are ready, the worker will shift to harvesting and packing, sorting produce like apples by quality, then weighing, labeling, and stacking them for storage or sale according to the quality and method of the employer. Beyond crop work, the role also includes maintaining the farm itself, such as repairing equipment, vehicles, fences, and other structures. Workers may be asked to help direct and monitor the work of casual and seasonal help during planting and harvesting as well as loading crops onto trucks and drive to storage facility. Workers may be asked to operate trucks or other multi-purpose vehicles to transport workers from housing (whether on or off farm) to the farm properties; haul tools, supplies, or crops; transport workers from place to place around the farm properties during the workday (including on public roads to reach farmer's fields); and/or transport workers to the grocery store, bank, and other essential needs on an as needed basis. Workers that are requested to drive will be required to possess a valid driver’s license; no worker will be rejected for not having a driver's license. Workers who do drive will still perform the same field work and other duties as non-driving workers; driving is not a primary duty. Workers will be compensated at the correct rate of pay for all hours worked, including when they are performing the employer’s obligation of driving. Harvest productivity must be at least 80 1-1/8-bushel boxes per 8 hours worked of bruise-free fruit for the fresh market, and 100 1-1/8-bushel boxes per 8 hours worked for processing apples, with no more than 10% bruising. Workers will be directed to either pick all fruit from the tree or selectively pick fruit based on size, color, crop conditions, state of maturity, and other USDA grade standards. The work assigned is physically demanding and requires long periods of standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, and climbing ladders. Workers must be able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds on a frequent basis. Workers must also be able to handle and climb ladders up to 24 feet in length (weighing approximately 2 pounds per foot) and carry filled buckets weighing up to 40 pounds. Workers are expected to report to work wearing suitable clothing and must be willing and able to perform duties in fields under varying conditions, including when plants are wet from dew or rain. Workers may also be required to work during light rain, snow, moderate winds, direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperatures. Workers are required to work 8-hour shifts within the hours of 6:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Friday and 5-hour shifts on Saturday. This schedule totals 45 hours per week. The 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. range accounts for varying orchard conditions (e.g., weather or crop readiness) to ensure that workers are able to complete the
