- Offer description:
All applicants must be able, willing and qualified to perform the work described in the job order and must be available for the entire period of employment specified in Section A.3 & A.4. This work order is for qualified people to perform a combination of tasks involved in the packing, pruning and picking of apples. The percentage of apples which are produced and packed by Forrence Orchards, Inc. is 100% and ZERO percentage of apples are grown by other producers. While packing, workers will: sort the apples according to size, color and grade before packing; line boxes, cartons or crates with treated paper or cardboard; place apples in containers for storage or shipment; weigh and be responsible for stamping grade, brand and date of packing on container; and pack apples according to the quality and method of the employer. Workers will perform maintenance of the buildings and general orchard tasks including but not limited to pruning and hand-thinning apples trees, harvesting apples and repairing field bins used to store apples. Additionally, workers may be asked to drive tractor for spraying and mowing, pick up brushes and stones on orchard ground, plant and water trees. Workers may be asked to operate trucks or other multi-purpose vehicles to transport workers from housing (whether on or off farm) to the farm properties; haul tools, supplies, or crops; transport workers from place to place around the farm properties during the workday (including on public roads to reach farmer's fields); and/or transport workers to the grocery store, bank, or laundry facilities on a once a week basis. Workers that are requested to drive will be required to possess a valid driver’s license; no worker will be rejected for not having a driver's license. Workers who do drive will still perform the same field work and other duties as non-driving workers; driving is not a primary duty. Workers will be compensated at the correct rate of pay for all hours worked, including when they are performing the employer’s obligation of driving. Workers must have the knowledge and ability to prune and train apple trees. Productivity must be at least 60 1-1/8-bushel boxes per 7 hours worked with no more than 4% bruising for fresh market. Workers must be willing to work in varied weather conditions – as low as 5 degrees and work on snow-covered ground up to two foot deep and during harvest as high as 90 degrees with damp mornings. Workers must be able to handle and climb a 16-foot ladder. The assigned duties are physically demanding and require prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and climbing ladders. Workers must be able to lift and carry up to 80 pounds on a frequent basis. Workers are require to work 8-hour shifts within the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday. This schedule totals 48 hours per week. The 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. range accounts for varying orchard conditions, including weather and crop readiness, while ensuring workers can complete the required weekly hours. Workers will not be scheduled to work a full 12-hour shift. Workers may be offered additional hours beyond the standard schedule, subject to the mutual agreement of the worker and management. Workers will be provided with at least a 30-minute lunch break, staggered between 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., as determined by both the workers and management. Workers may choose where to eat their lunch and must return to work after the 30-minute break. The daily and weekly work schedules may vary depending on orchard conditions, including weather, sunlight, temperature, and crop readiness. The employer will notify workers of any changes to the schedule. The employer will provide one day of training and allow two days of work for workers to demonstrate satisfactory performance of orchard duties.
