Crops/Commodities: Nursery Stock Primary duties (performed the majority of workdays): 90% Manual and 10% Mechanized. Perform manual and mechanized tasks associated with the indoor (a small portion of production is in greenhouses) and outdoor production of containerized and “Balled & Burlapped” horticultural products. Plant, cultivate, and maintain nursery stock, trees, shrubs, bedding plants, plugs, liners, fruit plants and other horticultural varieties. Prepare and clean production beds. Prepare fields/soil for planting. Plant/propagate plants. Remove cull stock, debris, tree stumps, brush, vines and other unwanted growth from planting area either manually or with powered or non-powered hand tools. Plant/pot seedlings or liners into proper container by hand or with mechanical planter, fill trays/containers with proper potting soil mixture, label trays/containers, and move product to/from greenhouses, production beds, and loading/unloading areas. Move containerized plants utilizing pushcarts, tracking trailers, or ATV's. Load/unload plants or other horticultural product onto trucks, trailers, or other movable vehicles. Install/Remove plastic coverings and shade cloth from bedded plants and greenhouses. Perform general plant maintenance. Irrigate and apply fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other plant related treatments at the correct times depending on plant type, growth, climate and crop conditions. Stake, train, prune, trim, shear, space, transplant and cull all production plants requiring such treatment to ensure availability of marketable products. Shear specified production plants to specific shape for marketability. Tie/position trees and plants by tying or wrapping as necessary. Count and inventory available product. Grade plants to ensure sold product meets customer standard. Select plants for sale according to grade/quality. Assist in digging plants to be placed in containerized pots or to be “Balled & Burlapped”. Pack, label, tag, pull, sort, and store plants by variety. Operate, install, move, and maintain irrigation systems and water lines. Dig and maintain ditches. Spray herbicide around beds, ditches, and greenhouses to prevent unwanted weeds or plants from overtaking production bed space. Dig ditches for plumbing installation or drainage. Install/remove ground cover for bed space. Mow, cut, and weed nursery land and associated areas. Use powered and non-powered hand tools including but not limited to rakes, hoes, mattocks, brush hooks, axes, shovels, shears, clippers, loppers, and saws. Lift and carry products and supplies. Operate, clean, and maintain nursery equipment and vehicles, including but not limited to tractors, four-wheelers, side-by-sides, work trucks, loaders, skid-steers, PTO attachments, and mixers. Assist with nursery building/field sanitation, maintenance, and repairs. Repair / Maintain fences/greenhouses/nursery facilities. Workers that have proper documentation/licenses may haul product to/from other nurseries, garden centers, or marketing locations. Workers who have a valid driver's license may drive transportation vehicles to transport workers when needed. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honey bees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job.
