- Offer description:
The HR Assistant/Farmworker is a seasonal position that primarily supports the coordination of arrival, onboarding, translation support, and assistance for H-2A and domestic seasonal agricultural workers (“seasonal workers”) with completing employment documentation. This role works closely with seasonal workers in harvesting fields and packing houses, assisting with personnel matters and other functions in direct support of the primary agricultural operation. Key responsibilities include serving as a communication link between management and H-2A workers to address questions and concerns about company policies and personnel matters. The HR Assistant also supports the organization of temporary employment of non-U.S. workers in compliance with applicable law. The HR Assistant is involved in the hiring process and, with guidance from Human Resources and H-2A Directors, helps promote workplace safety and supports the integrity of the H-2A program. Additional duties include assisting HR/H-2A team members with implementation and management of the H-2A program to ensure compliance with documentation and procedures, and processing, verifying, and maintaining personnel documentation, including staffing, recruitment, training, grievances, performance evaluations, classifications, and employee leaves of absence. The role also provides administrative support for seasonal workers, including clerical and office support, documentation and personnel records, and ensuring housing and transportation guidelines are followed for the H-2A program. The HR Assistant supports employee relations by fostering positive working relationships with seasonal workers and escalating issues to the H-2A team as needed. Finally, the HR Assistant conducts new H-2A employee orientation upon arrival at the worksite. Workers may also perform agricultural duties involving apples and cherries in support of orchard operations. Such duties may include manual thinning of blossoms or fruit clusters to control crop size and quality; pruning fruit trees using hand tools such as shears, loppers, and pruning saws; tying, clipping, or positioning limbs to trellis systems; and assisting with orchard establishment activities including tree planting, transplanting, trellis construction, irrigation maintenance, and general orchard labor. Workers may help with tasks such as weeding, hoeing, trunk painting, hand fertilizing, mowing, maintaining irrigation lines and sprinklers, clearing property, repairing fences or farm buildings, maintaining farm vehicles or equipment, and assisting with harvest preparation and cleanup. Workers may assist with apple harvesting by hand when required. Harvesting involves picking fruit from trees while standing on the ground or on ladders up to approximately 12–15 feet in height, placing fruit carefully into picking bags or buckets, and transferring fruit into bins while maintaining quality standards and preventing bruising or damage. Bruising from harvest shall not exceed 1% (WNY) for fresh and 1% (WNY) for processing. Workers may also assist with loading and unloading bins, spreading liners in bins, moving bins within orchard blocks, and sorting fruit that does not meet grade or quality standards. Workers must be able to safely use ladders, hand tools, and power equipment and may operate agricultural equipment such as tractors, planters, mowers, sprayers, cultivators, forklifts, skid loaders, and other farm machinery as needed. Work may involve lifting and carrying materials including boxes, bins, or supplies weighing up to approximately 100 pounds with assistance when necessary. Workers who possess a valid driver’s license and meet all applicable legal requirements may be asked, on a voluntary basis, to operate employer vehicles to transport workers, goods, or supplies in connection with business operations. This task is not a mandatory condition of employment and workers without a license remain fully eligible for the position.
