Crops/Commodities: Walnuts. Primary duties (performed the majority of workdays): Perform manual labor to plant walnut trees, cultivate and harvest walnuts by hand and machine. Clean, pack and load harvested products using equipment including, but not limited to: dryers, hullers, sweepers, shaker, harvesters and bankout; all of which proper training will be provided. Operate farm vehicles, tractors, and agricultural equipment associated with disking, aerating, seeding, weed spraying, mowing, raking, stacking. Ongoing orchard maintenance including pruning and thinning on ladders and lifts. Workers will be responsible for staking young trees. Workers must prune and thin each tree as shown by the supervisor. Limbs must not be torn from the tree, nor should limbs be completely stripped of leaves. Till soil, transplant, thin and prune crops. Clean, repair, and maintain farm vehicles and agricultural equipment. Pick up old walnuts in the orchard to be hauled off. Lift and carry buckets to spread fertilizer, keeping up, as tractor pulls fertilizer trailer through orchard, or by using wheelbarrow. Remove unwanted weeds by shovel in orchard. Insurable workers with a valid driver's licenses, clean driving record (no major moving violations such as but not limited to Driving While Intoxicated or Reckless Driving), medical certificate, may be allowed to drive employer owned and insured pick-up trucks, in conjunction with the employer's farming operations, with other workers as passengers, at worksites, between worksites and housing units, and into town for weekly trips. Weekly trips may include, but are not limited to: grocery stores, banks, and places of worship. Mow, cut, and weed fields using various mechanical agricultural equipment. Prepare and/or clear land for planting using mechanized or hand equipment to remove trash, rocks, or other debris or materials that may interfere with planting or harvesting activities. Perform ditching, shoveling, hoeing (long-handled), hauling, ground preparation, and other manual tasks. Set up, operate, and maintain irrigation equipment. Clear and maintain irrigation ditches including checking valves. Use mechanical equipment, pickaxe, and/or shovel to make new irrigation ditches in the field. Bending, stooping, and kneeling required. Use hand tools including, but not limited to: long handled hoes, shears, clippers, loppers, wheelbarrows, pipe fittings, pipe wrenches, and saws. Level land by moving dirt and other materials. Lift, carry, and load/unload products or supplies. Assist with existing farm building maintenance and orchard maintenance and repairs. Repair fences. Supervisor(s) will provide instructions and directions to workers. Workers must be able to comprehend and follow instructions and communicate effectively to supervisors. Workers must operate all equipment properly and in a manner that protects operator, others, and the employer's products and property. Failure to comply with safety requirments and operating instructions may result in disciplinary action up to and including immediate termination. Unusual, complex or non-routine activities will be supervised. Workers expected to perform basic duties in a proficient manner without close supervision. Alcohol and drug use prohibited on employer's property. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honeybees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Persons seeking employment in this position must be available for the entire period requested by the employer. Job opportunity is Skill Level I. All primary duties are entry-level and require close supervision and/or a short demonstration of the task by a more experienced worker. Employer may request, but not require, workers to work more than the stated daily hours and/or on a worker's Sabbath or federal holidays. Worker must report to work at designated time and place each day.
