Skill Level 1 Forage: Duties will include, but are not limited to: Land preparation, operating tillage equipment, cutting equipment. Take the hay bales to the storage barns/barns of farms that purchase the hay. Row Crops: Duties to include, but not limited to: Workers may drive and operate farm machinery to plant, cultivate, harvest and store grain crops such as corn, wheat, soybeans, etc. Attach farm implements such as plow, disc, and drill to tractor and drive tractor in field to till soil and plant/cultivate crop. Bushhog fields. Perform variety of other duties such as husking and shelling corn, lubricating and repairing farm machinery and unloading grain onto conveyors to storage bins and elevators. Fruit/Vegetable Production: Duties to include, but not limited to: Workers may drive and operate farm machinery to plant, cultivate, harvest and store vegetables. Attach farm implements such as plow, disc, and drill to tractor and drive tractor in field to till soil and plant/cultivate crop. Perform variety of other duties such as lubricating and repairing farm machinery. May plan and schedule plowing, cultivating and harvesting operations. Plant, cultivate, harvest, & pack vegetables (boxes, buckets & crates). Lay plastic, setting plants, weeding (w/hoe & by hand), driving stakes, grading/sorting and activities associated with vegetable production. Assist in set-up of product for sale of crop. Nursery: Duties to include but not limited to: Perform any combination of the following duties concerned with preparing soil and growth media, cultivating and otherwise participating in horticulture activities. Hauls and spreads topsoil, fertilizer, etc to condition land. Dig, rake and screen soil and fill cold frame and hot beds to prepare them for planting. Plant, spray, weed and water plants, shrubs and trees. Ties, bunches, wraps and pack flowers, plants and shrubs to fill orders. Load trucks for marketing. Work on potting line transplanting seedlings into selling containers and place in growing area. Assist with delivery of products to customers. Maintenance on farm equipment required in operation. Assist in set-up of products for sale of crops. Orchard: Work in orchard performing various job duties to include, but not limited to: thinning, pruning and harvesting of trees during growing season. Worker picks fruits according to grade, color and size. Picks low-hanging fruit while standing on the ground, higher branches are picked while standing on a ladder. Fruit is grasped with the hands and removed from the trees in a motion so as not to harm adjacent buds on tree branches. Fruit picked is placed into bag attached to harness strapped around shoulders. Worker moves ladder around trees and from tree to tree. Full bags are carefully emptied into wooden bins. Worker examines harvested fruit in bins and sort out any fruit not meeting the grade, color and size specifications. Care must be exercised at all times to prevent bruising or breaking of trees or fruit. Alternative Work: General farm maintenance and other duties as necessary in maintaining farming operation. Includes, but not limited to, preparing barns, draining fields, preparing soil for planting, maintenance of implements & equipment & other work as directly related to the harvest activities for which the worker is employed. Also include fixing and emptying and painting of fence/barns. Participate in livestock operation, duties may include, but not limited to, feeding, participating in calving, tagging, vaccinations, movement from pen to pen, and sorting. Such work will be offered when weather or harvest conditions prevent work in the primary activities listed above.
