The Fencing/Maintenance Laborer is responsible for the following duties during the spring, summer, and fall months: • Monitoring pasture health, soil moisture, and forage growth to ensure sustainable livestock nutrition during our growing season. • Implementing rotational grazing systems to optimize forage use and soil regeneration. • Maintaining fencing, water systems, and facilitating livestock movement across multiple paddocks during our growing season. • Collaborating with farm owners to maintain animal health and welfare standards. • Keeping detailed records of grazing schedules, pasture conditions, and livestock performance during our growing season. • Feed and water livestock and monitor food and water supplies. • Herd livestock to pastures for grazing. • Examine animals to detect illness, injury, or disease, and to check physical characteristics, such as the rate of weight gain. Workers must be physically able to lift up to 50 lbs. with assistance. Field temperatures range from 10 to 100 degrees (F)with possible wet morning conditions. Upon suspicion, the employer may conduct random drug tests post-hire, post-accident, or upon suspicion. Employer agrees to provide to the worker, without charge or deposit charge, all tools, supplies, and equipment required to perform the duties assigned. The Fencing/Maintenance Laborer position is required on a seasonal basis from late March through early December. During these months, livestock are actively managed on pasture, requiring daily oversight of grazing systems, forage availability, and animal movement. This period aligns with the growing season in upstate New York, when pastures are productive and rotational grazing is essential to animal health and soil sustainability. Since our farm is certified organic, our livestock must be on pasture during the spring through fall months. Pasture maintenance is a cornerstone of our organic livestock system. We employ a variety of regenerative and sustainable techniques to maintain healthy pastures and ensure optimal animal nutrition. These include rotational grazing, where livestock are moved between paddocks to allow forage regrowth and prevent overgrazing. We monitor soil health and forage density regularly to determine grazing intervals and rest periods. Our team uses portable fencing and mobile water systems to facilitate efficient livestock movement and minimize pasture damage. We also implement frost seeding and cover cropping to improve pasture biodiversity and soil fertility. These practices not only support animal health but also enhance carbon sequestration and long-term land productivity. This position is not needed during the winter months (January through early March), as livestock are housed indoors and fed stored forage. Fencing/Maintenance activities are suspended during this time due to snow cover and dormant forage growth, eliminating the need for a dedicated Fencing/Maintenance Laborer. There are several domestic workers currently employed at Engelbert Farms Organic LLC. These are year-round domestic workers who care for our livestock. During our spring, summer, and fall months, our livestock are extremely active on our pasture which requires the need for an additional worker to oversee pasture and fence preservation and upkeep. Work hours will be 5am-9am and 6pm-9pm/ or 7 hours per day. Workers will have Tuesday off.
