- Offer description:
Workers will perform a wide range of manual and mechanized tasks related to the propagation, care, and harvesting of nursery plants, shrubs, and trees. This position requires a minimum of 3 months of prior, verifiable experience working on a commercial nursery or tree farm, as the work is highly technical and improper handling can permanently damage young trees. Because beginners can kill or deform live trees by pruning or tying incorrectly, inexperienced workers must first practice on non-viable or dead trees; therefore, the employer cannot train new workers on live stock, and prior experience is mandatory. Workers will plant, spray, weed, fertilize, water, prune, thin, tie, stake, dig, harvest, and transplant trees and shrubs while understanding correct planting depth, root handling, and soil conditions. Workers will identify pests, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, and plant stress and will report issues promptly. Duties include mixing, loading, and applying pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, growth regulators, and other agricultural chemicals using backpack sprayers, hand wands, and tractor-mounted sprayers, following strict safety procedures, PPE requirements, re-entry intervals, and environmental protection standards. Workers must have experience performing precision pruning and shaping, including leader selection, corrective pruning cuts, proper angles, pressure techniques, and securing ties and clips without damaging tree structure. Workers will operate tractors, ATVs, forklifts, and nursery equipment to cultivate, fertilize, spray, load, and transport plant material and must know how to attach implements and perform basic maintenance. General nursery upkeep includes repairing buildings, greenhouses, irrigation lines, trellises, fences, display beds, and work areas. Workers will load, unload, space, and move plant material and must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. repeatedly. Work takes place outdoors in extreme temperatures ranging from below freezing to above 100°F and may occur in wet, muddy, or windy conditions. Schedules vary with seasonal needs, and workers may be asked, but not required, to work weekends, holidays, and overtime. Drug testing may occur randomly, post-accident, or upon reasonable suspicion at the employer’s expense.
