The job duties involve skilled farm labor for the purpose of planting, growing, and harvesting potatoes, corn and soybeans. Duties include: Operating equipment to prepare the land, plant potatoes, corn and soybeans, grow the crop, irrigate, fertilize, treat, till, and harvest the crop. This includes tractors, forklifts, conveyers, seed cutters, planters, harvesters, disks, chisel plows, diking soil, rolling rows, forming crop rows. Observe field conditions, including presence of weeds, insects and disease. Perform petiole sampling and other basic crop scouting, and yield monitoring activities. Report information to agronomist or supervisor. Set up, operate, monitor & maintain irrigation system. Monitor field soil moisture levels, record findings. Perform basic maintenance and repairs on all on farm equipment, including irrigation units and potato conveyers. Set up equipment to be used for harvesting and washline operations. Wash and disinfect potato equipment and trucks. Prepare site for harvest time operations. This includes installing washline and other potato handling equipment and conducting maintenance. During harvest, responsibilities include operating the potato piler, bobcat, potato harvester, wind rower and tractors. Drive a farm service vehicle or pickup truck to access irrigation in the fields, travel to the field, or bring parts to the equipment in the field. Organize the flow of potatoes on to the washline from the field trucks. Ensure varieties of potatoes are kept separate and communicate with co-workers regarding the variety of potatoes being unloaded. Disassemble and wash equipment at the conclusion of harvest. Other duties include performing general basic maintenance and welding as needed on farm equipment. Operate a farm truck as needed to move potatoes, corn or soybeans. General farm work is also included. Full time supervision is provided and all tools are provided at no cost. Workers must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time and work in extreme temperatures. Lifting objects up to 50 lbs., bending, twisting, and stooping regularly will be required. Must have or be able to obtain a valid drivers license (class A not required).
