Nursery Specialist: a. Assists in installing tree grow bags, ensuring proper bag depth b. Ensures proper soil-to-soilless ratios are applied during planting c. Plants seedlings and larger trees requiring use of shovels d. Pots seedlings, prunes, spaces, irrigates and culls plants to ensure the availability of marketable products e. Loads/unloads trucks and wagons f. Workers will perform work including but not limited to planting, transplanting, watering in nurseries and seasonal holding houses g. Propagate plants from cuttings h. Remove plastic from seasonal holding houses in spring and cover seasonal holding houses with plastic in fall i. Fill, lift, and carry various-sized pots with soil and plants weighing as much as 60 pounds j. Plants must be handled carefully so that minimal leaves, limbs, and roots are broken during the transplanting process k. Performs other duties involved in maintaining plant materials and nursery stock, holding yards, and shipping areas l. Your employer may ask you to carry out additional duties than those listed here Physical Requirements: Workers may be required to handle products weighing up to 75 pounds and lift to a height of 5 feet. The job involves working on their feet in bent positions for long periods, repetitive movements, and extensive walking, stooping, and bending over. Work is required in fields when plants are wet with dew and rain, and may be required during light rain, snow, moderate winds, direct sun, high humidity, and extreme temperatures. Temperatures in fields during working hours can range from 10 to over 100 degrees F. Workers may be required to work during occasional showers not severe enough to stop field operations. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honeybees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's job. Other Work Requirements Supervisor(s) will provide instructions and directions to workers. Workers must be able to comprehend and follow instructions and communicate effectively to supervisors. Unusual, complex or non-routine activities will be supervised. Workers are expected to perform essential duties proficiently without close supervision. Employers may request, but not require, workers to work more than the stated daily hours and/or on a worker's Sabbath or US federal holidays. Workers should be able to do the work required with or without reasonable accommodation. Must wear assigned personal protective equipment when required. Must report for work daily, wearing work clothing and boots or other durable footwear. Shorts, bathing suits or other casual clothing are not permitted. Workers wearing inappropriate clothing for work will not be permitted to start work. Use, possession, transfer, offer, sale, or manufacture of marijuana and/or controlled substances is strictly prohibited and will be grounds for immediate termination. All work sites are alcohol and drug-free workplaces. Employees must not report for work, enter the employers' property or perform work while under the influence of or having used alcohol, marijuana, illegal controlled substances, or any other substance that may in any way adversely affect alertness, coordination, reaction time or safety. A clean driving record is required. Must have or be able to obtain a driver's license within 30 days following hire. Employer may request workers to work more than the stated daily hours and/or on a worker's Sabbath or federal holidays. The worker must report to work at the designated time and place daily. Daily or weekly work schedules may vary due to weather, sunlight, temperature, crop conditions, and other factors. Employers will notify workers of any change to start time.
