Nursery: Potting, seeding, staking and watering of plants. Weeding, pruning, fertilizing and may spray herbicide to kill weeds in and around the greenhouses. Transplant/pot plants. Dig, cut and transplant seedlings, cuttings, trees and shrubs. Check existing irrigations systems for leaks and clogs. Maintain and repair irrigation and climate control systems. Regulate greenhouse conditions, indoor and outdoor irrigation systems. Feel plant leaves and note any changes to detect the presence of insects or disease and report to the greenhouse supervisor. Move contained shrubs, plants and trees using wheelbarrows. Tie and bunch plants, shrubs and trees for transport. Load mulch for customers. Prepare overgrown areas behind greenhouses to extend area for plants. Check plant stalls and repair them. Chop wood and store it for winter months to heat greenhouses. Cover greenhouses and check for tears in coverings; seal any tears. Strap and tie down coverings securely. Open greenhouses in spring. Load plants, shrubs and flowers onto plant carts and carry them to customers vehicles. Be able to lift up to 80 lbs. Climb step ladders to reach hanging plants. Work in extreme weather, heat or cold for long hours. A normal workweek is Monday – Saturday 7:00 am – 5:00 pm. Work hours and days will vary as during the fall and spring peak season, the greenhouses are open 7 days per week. However, each worker will get a mandatory day off each week during the busy season and normal operating schedules. General Conditions: If work is available beyond normal workdays, the employer may offer, but not require, the worker an opportunity to work additional hours. Workers will report to work at designated time and place as directed by assigned employer each day. workers may be requested ten (10) hours per day depending on conditions in fields and the maturity of the crops. Also, workers may be requested to work on federal holidays and their Sabbath but will not be required. Workers may volunteer to work additional hours when work is available. Downtime: Workers should expect occasional periods of little or no work because of weather, crop or other conditions beyond the employer’s control. These periods can occur any time throughout the season. Workers may be required to work in fields when crops are wet with dew / rain and should have suitable clothing for conditions which include light rain and temperatures ranging from 10 degrees to more than 100 degrees. Workers should be able to stand, bend, stoop and work for prolonged periods of time and be physically fit to perform duties as assigned.
