- Offer description:
Sugarcane Planters - 25 temporary positions; approximately 6.5 weeks; job to begin 08/01/25 through 09/15/25; Duties: Plant new seedcane (new sugarcane) by hand. Load seedcane into wagons. Walk behind a wagon, gently pulling small bundles of whole stalk cane out of the wagon and dropping them into the open furrows. As part of efficient and diligent Louisiana Sugarcane farming, 20-25% of a sugarcane farm is dedicated to planting NEW seedcane by hand every year during the seedcane planting campaign. This proactive approach ensures a healthy rotation of younger cane, a key factor in maintaining a sustainable and proactive farm. This new sugarcane is NOT planted with seeds; it is planted with stalks of cane that can be up to 8 feet long. The"seedcane" is cut by a whole stalk harvester and then loaded into wagons. The wagons are slowly towed by a tractor while the Sugarcane Planters walk behind them, gently pulling small bundles of whole stalk cane out of the wagon and dropping them into the open furrows. Planting the whole stalk cane by hand is the method recommended by the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center's Sugarcane Production Handbook. The hand-planting method has proven to yield the highest returns over time with the least risk. It is one of the most labor-intensive activities on a sugarcane farm; it requires a lot of manpower to plant a small amount of acreage each day of the planting campaign. $14.83 per hour. 40 hrs a week. M-F; 7AM-4PM base schedule, but as with all agricultural work, it is influenced by the weather. OT may vary but is not guaranteed; three (3) months of experience in the job offered is required.
