Crops/Commodities: Farmwork: cucumbers, peppers, hard squash, beets, turnips, cabbage, summer squash, green beans and bell pepper. Plant, cultivate, harvest cucumber, peppers, hard squash, beets, turnips, cabbage, summer squash, green beans and bell pepper. Transplant crops by walking and carrying trays through assigned rows in the field while bending and stooping to carefully place the transplants into pre-dug holes and covering roots with soil. Operate farm vehicles, implements and mechanical equipment including tractors, tractor-drawn machinery, and self-propelled machinery to plant and harvest crops. Use hand tools such as shovels, tampers, clippers, machetes, hoes, knives and rakes. Peppers and cucumbers will be manually harvested by walking through the field and picking into baskets, carrying full baskets to dumpers riding on trailers moving alongside rows, and dumping into bins on the trailer. Cabbage will be cut at the base using a knife, placed into buckets that when full will be carried and dumped into bins located throughout the field. Heads may only be cut if they are the correct quality and width. Harvest beets and turnips by pulling out of the ground by hand, using a clipper/knife to trim the top leaves and bottom tap roots, placing into buckets and carrying full buckets to dumpers riding on trailers moving alongside rows, and dumping into bins on the trailers. Hard squashes of the correct size and quality will be cut from the vine using clippers, placed into buckets and dumped into bins. Determine maturity level of produce quickly and consistently by color, feel and size and apply correct defect tolerance, handling and harvest standards as instructed by supervisor. Workers will pick plants clean of produce of the correct size and maturity. Inform farmer or farm managers of crop progress. Workers must select harvestable produce based on correct size, maturity and quality. Workers will not break skin, damage, drop or bruise produce, or leave any appropriate product on the plant during harvest. Workers must discard and destroy produce that has been in contact with blood. Any produce harvested or still on the plant that has been exposed to blood shall be discarded and destroyed. Workers must pass by or discard any produce that bears obvious signs of pest activity, fecal contamination, plant disease, or physical damage, or any produce that has been dropped on the ground. Workers must wash buckets, tools and equipment to avoid unnecessary introduction of soil into harvest containers and field bins, or onto tools or other harvesting equipment. Assemble boxes in the packing house. Clean, grade, sort, wash, label, pack and load harvested produce. Package harvested crops into bins, bags, boxes, plastic containers and crates. Load boxes onto pallets and transport vehicles. Mark and label containers. Measure, weigh and count products and materials. Examine and inspect product according to packing specifications. Record information about product or packaging on specific forms. Remove defective or completed product and place in specified areas. Load materials and products into package processing equipment. Use hand tools to pull, move, and sort product, materials, containers and orders. Workers must use care not to damage or bruise produce. Assemble cartons, crates and containers using hand tools. Clean containers, materials, supplies and work areas using cleaning solutions and hand tools. Pull up used plastic. Clean plastic of debris. Participate in irrigation activities including setting up, repairing, operating and maintaining drip and other irrigation equipment. Manually pull weeds, hoe, mow, weed eat and remove used stakes and string. Stake, string, tie and thin crops, as instructed by supervisor. Remove or clean plant debris. Clean fields when harvest activities are complete. Till soil. Clear and maintain fields and irrigation ditches. Count and check harvested produce. Repair fences and farm buildings.
