Crops/Commodities: Queen Rearing and Honey Production. This job requires a minimum of three months of prior experience working on a honeybee farm handling both manual and machine tasks associated with beekeeping or queen rearing. Worker must be familiar with working with bees in all stages, from the egg through fully developed workers, drones and queens; must work all aspects of commercial bee keeping, including assessing a colony to determine if it needs food or medicine, feeding and medicating bees, maintaining hives in a healthy state, increasing number of hives, raising and replacing queens, making divides, making, painting and cleaning boxes, supering hives. Raise honeybees to produce honey and maintain colony health. Assist in rearing of queen bees. Find and cage queens and install queen cells. May raise honeybees to produce bees and queen bees for resale. Split bee colonies. Find and destroy superfluous queen bee cells to prevent division of colony by warming. Monitor, maintain and increase beehives. Mow around bee yards. Workers will clean and scrape beehives removing wax buildup and debris. Force bees from hives, uncap harvested honeycombs and extract honey from honeycombs. Load and unload flatbed trucks. Operate honey extracting equipment and misc. tools used to work with honeybees. Harvest, extract, and package honey. Medicate, feed, and maintain beehives. Treat beehives for mites. Identify and detect common brood diseases. Build and repair bee boxes and other beekeeping equipment. Sterilize all honey extraction equipment and facilities daily. Winterize all beekeeping facilities and equipment and prepare all beehives to be shipped at the end of the season. Perform minor daily and incidental upkeep to equipment, worksite, and colony boxes. Prepare bees and beekeeping equipment. A veil will be provided to protect the face from stings. Wear gloves while working with the beehives. Work is done outdoors for long periods of time and requires prolonged periods of standing and/or walking, repetitive movements, and frequent bending and/or stooping. Workers must be able to handle, lift, and carry heavy or bulky objects (product, containers) in accordance with the specified lifting requirements. Employer-paid post-hire drug testing is required after a worker has an accident at work. Clean driving record required. Must have or be able to obtain driver's license within 30 days following hire. Workers with appropriate licenses and a valid doctor's certificate may be asked to drive other workers. Supervisor(s) will provide instructions and directions to workers. Workers must be able to comprehend and follow instructions and communicate effectively to supervisors. Unusual, complex or non-routine activities will be supervised. Workers expected to perform basic duties in a proficient manner without close supervision. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, honeybees, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or related chemicals may affect a worker's ability to perform the job. Persons seeking employment in this position must be available for the entire period requested by the employer. An applicant for this job must be available to work for the entire itinerary. An applicant referred to the employer after the labor certification has been granted, but before 50 percent of the work contract period for the entire itinerary has elapsed, must be available and willing to join the employer at whatever place the employer is located at the time and remain with the employer for the duration of the itinerary. Employer may request, but not require, workers to work more than the stated daily hours and/or on a worker's Sabbath or federal holidays. Worker must report to work at designated time and place each day. Daily or weekly work schedule may vary due to weather, sunlight, temperature, crop conditions, and other factors. Employer will notify workers of any change to start time. Workers will have an unpaid lunch break.
