- Offer description:
The Truck Driver/Sod position at Jasperson Sod is a temporary/seasonal position and directly tied to our sod/turfgrass growing production season. This position is only required during the end of our growing/harvest season and is not needed during the Winter months. It is therefore seasonal. Further, the position is agricultural because we are transporting sod grown on our farm to other Jasperson farm-owned properties, as well as directly to market. Due to the lack of a legal qualified work force, our farm must implement the use of H-2A foreign workers. This program will ensure that our seasonal crops and our substantial investment, is not compromised or put at risk. The role involves a variety of tasks related to loading, transporting, and unloading crops and materials. Key duties include manually or using equipment like conveyors, forklifts, and handtrucks to load and unload products, ensuring they are properly secured for transport. You will also operate transfer augers, suction gates, shovels, or pitchforks to feed machines with products or move materials into containers or hoppers. As part of the transportation responsibilities, you'll drive trucks—including flatbed trailers and heavy-duty trucks—carrying sod or other farm products to various farm properties and markets. The job requires using forklifts and tarping equipment to load and unload trucks, move goods between the field and shop, and ensure that vehicles are properly positioned for loading. In addition to transporting crops and materials, you'll be responsible for ensuring all load-related documentation is accurate and complete. This includes checking the conditions of trailers after unloading to ensure no damage has occurred. You’ll also conduct vehicle inspections to ensure that mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order, performing minor maintenance tasks such as adding oil or fuel. Your duties will also involve navigating trucks to and from weigh stations, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. You will follow specific procedures for transporting dangerous goods or special cargo, including checking refrigeration for perishable items or providing food and water for livestock. You may also provide directions to laborers packing goods onto trailers and work with others to secure cargo using ropes, chains, binders, or covers. The role requires reading and interpreting maps, load tickets, and bills of lading to determine the most efficient routes and load details. You’ll use technology, including GPS systems and truck cab computers, to adjust routes based on traffic, weather, and other conditions to minimize fuel consumption and carbon emissions. At times, you will need to handle special equipment such as tire chains or sanders and perform tasks like securing cargo or removing debris from trailers after unloading. Throughout the day, you'll keep logs of working hours and vehicle maintenance, report vehicle defects, accidents, or traffic violations, and ensure safety protocols are followed. You’ll also collect receipts or signatures for delivered goods and may be responsible for collecting payment for services when required. This job combines driving skills with manual labor, requiring both attention to detail and a focus on safety, efficiency, and customer service.
